Before you buy anything

Read your lease for rules on alterations, drilling, locks and cameras.
Email your landlord about anything that touches the door, wiring or thermostat, and save the reply.
Photograph doors, walls, the thermostat and its wiring on move-in day.
Check that your Wi-Fi router broadcasts 2.4GHz; most smart devices need it.
Pick one voice assistant so every device works together. Read the guide

Entry and security

Choose a smart lock that keeps your existing deadbolt and keys. Read the guide
Add a doorbell camera without drilling: peephole cam or no-drill mount. Read the guide
Compare peephole cameras if your building bans exterior devices. Read the guide
Decide whether you need a camera subscription or free local storage. Read the guide
Set motion zones so cameras don't record neighbors' doors.

Climate and comfort

Check whether you're allowed and able to swap the thermostat. Read the guide

Move-out day

Reinstall the original deadbolt parts, peephole and thermostat.
Peel adhesive mounts slowly; warm stubborn tape with a hair dryer.
Wipe residue with rubbing alcohol and patch any small holes.
Factory-reset devices you leave behind and remove them from your apps.
