Editorial policy

RenterSmartHome publishes buying guides and how-tos for people who rent. This policy explains how a guide goes from idea to page, and what we promise readers.

How a guide is made

  1. Topic selection. We pick questions renters actually search for, using keyword data and the questions people ask in renter communities.
  2. Product research. We shortlist products that are currently sold in the U.S., then check manufacturer specifications, installation manuals, compatibility lists and long-term owner reports.
  3. Renter scoring. Each product is judged on install footprint, reversibility, portability, subscription costs and ecosystem support (see how we research).
  4. Writing and fact-checking. Specifications and claims are checked against the sources listed at the end of each guide. We do not publish prices, star ratings or testing claims we cannot support.
  5. Review and updates. Guides show the date they were last reviewed. We revisit them when products are discontinued, replaced or materially changed.

Use of AI tools

We use AI-assisted tools to help with research, drafting and on-page SEO checks. Every recommendation must trace back to verifiable sources, and our editorial standards, not a tool, decide what gets published and recommended.

Independence

We earn money through affiliate links, including as an Amazon Associate. Brands cannot buy placement or review outcomes, and commission rates do not influence rankings. See our affiliate disclosure.

Corrections

If something is wrong or out of date, email hello@rentersmarthome.us. We review every report, fix verified errors promptly, and update the guide's review date.

Safety and legal information

Our guides are general information, not legal or electrical advice. Lease terms and local laws vary, so we always tell you when a device touches locks, wiring or HVAC and suggest asking your landlord in writing.
