UpdatedOur three rules
Every product on this site passes these before we recommend it. Read the full research process.
Nothing permanent
Plug-in, battery, adhesive or swap-and-restore installs only. Anything that touches wiring, locks or HVAC is flagged so you can ask first.
It moves with you
It works in the next apartment, on the next Wi-Fi network, without a contractor. We favor Matter so you are never locked to one app.
Honest about costs
We say which features need a subscription, what a landlord might object to, and where a cheaper option does the job.
